Intelligent Life in the Universe
Sagan and Slikovoski
Year read: approximately 1974, my age, approximately 33
My friend Matthew told me to read this book, which, before Amazon.com, was hard to find. It is a summary of ideas about the universe to that time, including speculation about other intelligent life. Among many other things, it described "Dyson Spheres," the idea of an intelligent life form dismantling a large planet and using the material to make a hollow sphere the size of a planets orbit around its sun in order to capture all of the sun's energy. For me the book bridged The Universe and Dr. Einstein (an introduction to relativity and quantum physics) and Star Trek. I suspect the creators of Star Trek read it too.
