The Hero With A Thousand Faces

Joseph Campbell
Year read: approximately 1975, my age, approximately 34

I had been vaguely ware of Campbell's books, but did not know what they or he were about until around 1972 when a friend told us that "this interesting guy was doing seminars in New York." We went and were blown away by Campbell's presentations of the mythologies and arts of all of the world's major cultures. Campbell combined the syncretic approach that I had appreciated in Spengler, with the arts and the psychological insights of Freud and Jung. His lectures were slide illustrated. Over the years I have read most of Campbell's books. I find all of them wonderful, but Hero perhaps the most important.
