Slide-illustrated lectures, readings, course project. Note: Throughout this course syllabus, we make reference to "Venturi." Xerox copy must be submitted at end of course. · Student Hours per Week: three in class, approximately three in preparation · Evaluation of Student Work: Grade will be derived as follows: ~ Quizzes on reading: approx 5% each, total 10% ~ Final exam: approx 40% ~ Project: approx 40% ~ Lecture notes: approx 10% · Grade may be lowered for poor attendance and lack of participation Note: Additional assignments and/or changes may be made at the discretion of the instructor. Required Books: Louis I. Kahn, condensed version, Universal Between Silence and Light, John Lobell, Shambhala Complexity & Contradiction in Architecture, Venturi, MOMA Out of the Ordinary, Brownlee, Yale Project/Paper For the course project you may choose an analysis project, or one of two papers. You will present your project or paper in class and submit a xerox copy. Failure to present on the assigned date will result in a loss of one letter grade on the project. Project Analysis of a Kahn or Venturi Building This is primarily a graphic presentation. Your ideas are to be presented in drawings with accompanying text as needed for clarity. You are to assume that your project is being published in a magazine and you will not be there to explain it, so it has to explain itself. All must be evident through the graphics, labels, legends, etc. Drawing size, 11" x 17", with as many drawings as you need. Your analysis can refer to any of the following: the underlying organization of the building, historical precedents for the building, or comparisons with other buildings. All drawings must be your own, no xeroxes. You will hang your 11" x 17" drawings in class and then keep them. You are to make an 8 ½" x 11" xerox to submit. - Or - Paper on Kahn Louis Kahn and Modernism What do we mean by modernism in architecture? Who are the major proponents/practitioners? How does Kahn's work and/or philosophy fit or not fit into the definition of modernism you have given? Give specific examples of Kahn's work. In discussing modernism, refer to specific architects and specific examples of their work. Paper should be about 1,500 words long. - Or - Paper on Venturi Venturi and an American Architecture Sullivan and Wright sought to create a uniquely American architecture. The European Modern Movement (the International Style) sought to create an architecture independent of national cultures, a universal architecture. Venturi rejects this idea and is interested in the American context and the specifics of his sites. Discuss why and how an international design was sought, how Venturi's approach differs, if you would consider his an "American Architecture," and if so, why. Make reference to specific International style architects and projects, and to specific project by Venturi. Paper should be about 1,500 words long.
