Art and Architecture

As well as my architectural work, I have done sculpture and large environmental installations.

  • Minimal Sculpture in Stainless Steel, 1966
Done in collaboration with Michael Steiner
  • Environment IV, Corridors, 1967
An "environment" installation tilted at the Architectural League of New York. It pioneered the concept of a sculpture not being an object in space, but rather totally transforming the space of the gallery. I put a three-foot grid on the floor, and then placed a series of panels on the grid in a pattern in such a way as to create a series of corridors, the illusion of extended space, and isolated defined areas. The corridors were monitored by electric eyes that activated sounds (created by my collaborator, Michael Steiner) that reflected the patterns of movement of people through the environment.
  • Environment IV House
Sketches for a house based on the repeating patterned space of my Environment IV, Corridors installation.

Shows I Curated From 1968 to 1970

I was Chair of the league's Current Works Committee, at The Architectural League and curated a series of shows that were highly innovative and drew wide attention. They included:

  • James Lee Byars, 1968
A series of installations in the League's gallery and around the city featuring communal garments in which the audience could participate.
  • Urban Design New York, 1969
A presentation of the Regional Plan Association of conceptual proposals for the future development of Manhattan.
  • Street Works, 1969
A series of events and performances pieces by a group of New York poets.
  • Hyperspaces by Raimund Abraham , 1969
A transformation of the gallery space to reflect a minimalist view.
  • Dial-a-Poem, 1969
Presentation of the work of leading contemporary accessable by telephone.   The project drew over one million phone calls.
  • Bruce Goff Show, 1970
The first major exhibition of Bruce Goff's work.
